I wanted to share that the 2023 Empower Symposium hosted by Therapy PLUS, LLC was a HUGE success! This year’s theme was centered around raising awareness about maternal and infant health outcomes and child welfare in our State. We discussed strategies for prevention and methods for improving outcomes. The Symposium had over 60 social workers and maternal and infant care advocates to register. Attendees were from all over the State of Mississippi. With the support of the Mississippi State Department of Health and Centers For Disease Control (CDC) ERASE Grant funding we were able to provide the event at no cost to attendees along with lunch. SIX continuing educational credits were approved by the Mississippi Board of Social Workers and Marriage & Family Therapist and were also provided FREE to attendees! I am extremely thankful to our stakeholders Six Dimensions , Mississippi Child Advocacy Center, Krista Woods Counseling and Carlisle Counseling and Consulting Services,LLC for their partnership and dymanic presentations!

According to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Health), there are several factors that impact African Americans having adequate access to mental health care. These barriers include socioeconomic disparities, stigma, provider bias and inequality of care. African American women are at particular risk for not seeking help for mental health care needs.
